Macular Degeneration - What is it - How Can We Help Prevent it?
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) destroys central vision and is the leading cause of blindness over age 60, and currently affects approximately 15 million people. Due to the aging Baby Boomer population, this figure is expected to double by 2020. While there is not cure for AMD, and its effects are irreversible, there are risks that can be mitigated in fighting the disease.
Some treatments include surgery, injections, monitoring and simple hope. In our office we have taken several steps ahead to help in combating this debilitating and sight robbing disease. First, we offer Macular Pigment Protective Density Test (MPOD or MPPD) in house and are one of the only office which does so in our area. This test is non-invasive, takes about 1-2 min per eye and give us the ability to see your risk factor to this disease. To learn more about MPOD/MPPD testing please CLICK HERE.
Second, we also have incorporated Scientifically Proven Vitamin Therapy. Vitamins, called EyePromise Restore, have been shown to help slow down the progression and stabilize the retina, hopefully from further degeneration. Vitamin therapy changes as new products and information come about. Stop in or call us to find out about vitamin therapy if you or someone you know is suffering from AMD, glaucoma, dry eyes, diabetes, etc. To learn more about vitamin therapies we recommended please CLICK HERE.
Third, we have invested in a Retinal Laser Scan, which we have in house and run everyday. This test, called the OCT Retinal Laser Scan, is capable of picking up the earliest swelling, bleeds, rips, tears, and cysts in the retina which can lead to vision loss and blindness.
