Wearing your contact lenses too long? Here is what can happen...
Don’t think wearing contacts too long or sleeping in unapproved contacts can take a toll on your eyes? Here are just two cases we recently saw in the office which tell otherwise.
The first picture is of “neovascularization” or new blood vessel growth. Overwear of your contact lenses causes the cornea to starve for oxygen, which in turn activates new blood vessel growth. While this seems like a good idea, the new vessels leak, are poorly made, weaken the cornea and finally can cause scarring or loss of sight as as they dig deeper in.
Case two shows us an even worse case of contact lens overwear: a bacterial infection almost in the center of the eye. Luckily for this patient we were able to fix the infection but the damage it did to the cornea is irreversible. The large white haze / scar is from the infection and causes halos, glare and reduced vision for this patient.... Just because she wanted to stretch the wear time a bit longer. Cost to fix this? Over $470.00 in visits and medication ... and now she is permanently out of contacts.
DON’T RISK YOUR EYES and YOUR VISION.
Other risks for contact lens overwer?
- Corneal cell abnormalities
- Small cysts on the cornea (ouch!)
- Corneal thinning and scarring
- Reduced corneal sensitivity
- Huge medical bills
- Corneal transplant
- Loss of vision
