Glaucoma Nerve
About 3 million people have glaucoma and about 50% actual know they do! Glaucoma causes damage to the eye's optic nerve which can lead to vision loss and blindness. Glaucoma, in most causes, occurs slowly and painlessly making it difficult to diagnose without an eye exam. Fortunately, with early treatment and advanced medications as used in our office, we are able to protect the optic nerve and preserve vision. Don't forget your annual medical eye exam.
The second picture shows how the center of the nerve enlarges causing damage to the nerve tissue. Here we can see the inside of the nerve is quite large (similar to the hole in a donut being too large). With increased pressure the nerve is damaged causing a larger hole (cup) and loss of vision.
