What are floaters?
Floaters are small, dark, cobweb-like spots that float around in the eye's vitreous humor (the gel part of the eye). They are caused by tiny pieces of debris, often called "floaters," which attach themselves to the vitreous humor. Floaters can interfere with vision and/or be very annoying. Other types of floaters, such as PVDs (posterior vitreous detachments) can impact your vision even greater. These floaters hover over the retina and can cause flashes/shadows plus breaks or tears in the nearby tissue.
How does Vitreolysis work?
Vitreolysis laser treatment is an effective way to reduce the number of floaters within the eye. This procedure utilizes a small laser beam (YAG laser) to selectively target and break up the floaters. The laser beam is directed at the floaters, causing them to break up into smaller pieces that can then be reabsorbed by the body. Most patients usually need up to 3 treatments and can be billed to your major medical insurance. Vitreolyisis laser is located locally and Dr. Tahir can discuss the risk and benefits of this treatment.
The procedure is generally quick and painless and can be performed the same day. It is important to note, however, that the procedure may not be successful in removing all of the floaters. Some floaters may remain and may cause visual interference.
