Punctal plugs are a great way of relieving dry eye symptoms by helping to keep more of the natural tears in the eye longer. By doing so, your cornea or contact lenses, etc. have more tears to use. With higher tear content your cornea also has a better chance of healing.
How Does it Work
A small (usually 0.4 mm) self dissolving plug is placed in the puncta, the small drain located in the upper and lower eye lid corners. This procedure presents minimal risk and generally zero discomfort. They plugs are placed in the office under mild anesthetic and take about 5 min to do. Overall we describe it as plugging the sink and letting the faucet continue. With plugs you get to use more of your natural tears.
Dr. Tahir has been inserting and using puctal plugs for over 16 years. He feels they are a great alternative to other dry eye treatments as they office a natural remedy and low maintenance.
Insurance
