What is the difference between and Optometrist and Ophthalmologist?
An Optometrist is the doctor of choice for eye health care, glasses/ contact lens prescriptions, and vision examinations including other levels of care including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, cataracts, etc. An Optometrist can prescribe medications for eye infections, perform foreign body removal and other in-office procedures. However, there are times where specialization is required or co-management with a specialist is required.
An Ophthalmologist is an eye surgeon specializing in certain parts of the eye which require repair or replacement. Many optometrists and ophthalmologists work together to provide the best of both worlds and care to the patient.
